I’ve been thinking about this for a while now, so we’ve got some of the most advanced gaming systems you could ever expect to see, hard drives where memory is no obstacle now. Games which play like movies, consoles that can even play movies, so what is going to be the next big thing in the gaming world?

Personally I think with games with such a high price tag on them now and with us in the middle of a recession and so many out of work the gaming industry is going to have to start thinking of ways to keep those sales up or slash prices, which they don’t particularly like to do. With game rentals an option sales can only go down, unless you give the consumer a reason to keep paying $60 per game.

One way to do this would be to start giving people a chance at making some money playing games, I really don’t know why it isn’t already a big thing, it’s been done before with great success.

If you bring an average game onto the market with only a fair rating, add $10,000 prize money to the first person to solve it then you see sales start to treble and quadruple for an otherwise unpopular game.
It was done back in the 80’s when a type of game computer keyboard called the commodore 64 was extremely popular, the game was called Eureka and it was an adventure game, the first person to put the pieces together and solve the adventure and phoned the telephone number and won the money, turned out it was a 15yr old from the United Kingdom and actually won the 25,000 pounds ( uk sterling ), that’s around $50,000 give or take a few hundred.

Ok it’s a gimmick of sorts but it creates sales, and also gives gamers an extra reason for buying the game, even if they wouldn’t normally have bought it.

I do believe that this will eventually happen, it’s just who starts it off, the rest will follow suit. Let’s face it playing Resident Evil 5 was amazing, imaging how much better it would have been if there was 10K prize money to fight for, and I wouldn’t feel so guilty about spending so many hours playing my fave game 🙂

What do you think will be the next big thing in gaming?

Had a chance to play the demo for Brutal Legend today, this is my biggest surprise as far as games go this year, it really didn’t sound like my kind of game but it turned out to be a really fun game.
If you don’t buy this one at least rent it, the comments are really funny, the demo got completed in about 20 minutes but we couldn’t stop laughing, cool graphics and easy to use buttons make it a really fun game to play. I’ll write a review on it once I play the whole game but I don’t want to give anything away here.

If your looking for decent boss battles which seem to last forever then Devil May Cry 4 is right up your street, awesome graphics too, great cut scenes, if you liked the previous Devil May Cry’s you’ll love this one.

I’ve also been playing Infamous today for a while and this one is a keeper, another really fun game to play and very original, main story mode with side quests is going to make this one last many hours, I spent so much time messing around with my awesome powers and climbing stuff I never even finished the quest in the demo, it was a lot of fun.

Also watched the trailer for borderlands, this looks like another great game, tons of weapons, characters and looks like it’s going to be one of those games which is very open ended like fallout 3, talking of which i’ll be getting the add-ons for fallout 3 any day now.

Worse game played was Batman, the graphics were pretty awesome as were the cut scenes, I didn’t like the fighting much as the moves didn’t seem to connect with the enemy, it was like the enemy was reacting to the wind of my kicks or punches, and you can’t hit anyone else but enemies, not even the guards which was wierd, there seems like there will be loads of stuff to do in this game, just in the demo I unlocked some stuff so i’d recommend this one as a rental only, great looking game but some disappointments along the way.

Merchandise

It’s not that often you find decent collectable memorabilia at a reasonable price so I thought i’d put some items here for “The Godfather” fans.

First up is a couple of reasonably priced godfather framed prints both priced at $11.99

Godfather Framed Print
The Godfather framed classic commemorative measures 10 1/4" x 8", and features a 4" x 6" glossy photo of a scene from the film.In addition to a written description, the picture shows actors Marlon Brando and Al Pacino.

Godfather Framed Print

The second framed print is the same dimensions as above but the picture shows actor Marlon Brando as ‘Vito Corleone.’

If you want something a little bigger then how about a godfather door poster:

Marlon Brando & Cat "Godfather" Door Poster

Door size poster of Marlon Brando from "The Godfather". Measures 21" x 62". Sorry can't put the picture here but it won't fit, lol. Priced at $14.99 it's a good buy. Clicking on the link will show you the picture and will open in a new window.

For those who want something a little more personal then how about a godfather T-shirt?

The Godfather, Vito Corleone T-Shirt

The Godfather black t-shirt is made of 100% cotton. The back of the t-shirt features the classic line from the movie, "Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer," as said by Vito Corleone, and on the front a picture of Marlon Brando. Price is $16.99 or XXL $17.99

These are brought to you courtesy of the hollywood megastore, click on any link will take you there and you can check out the rest of the godfather items like the Don leather jacket, a bit more pricey but a definite collectable for a godfather fan.

It seems we have a lot to choose from over the next couple of months, lots of new games coming in time for christmas so there should be a game for everyone.

Some of the games i’ll be reviewing over the next few days will be Brutal Legend ( release date oct 13th ), Borderlands ( release date oct 20th ), Assassins Creed 2 ( release date nov 17th ), Dragon Age: Origins ( release date nov 19th ), The Saboteur ( release date dec 8th ) and quite few more.

I’ll get you as much info on these new games which should give you an idea of what to start spending your christmas money on.

If you want me to give you some info or review a particular game just drop a post in here and i’ll see what I can do, you can pre-order most “coming soon” titles from amazon or check out my review on Gamefly and rent them first so you don’t waste money.

I’ve personally been a member of Gamefly for three months now, if your one of the latest console owners like myself you know how expensive the latest games are and you can’t always rely on reviews before buying a game as i’ve found out from personal experience.

It makes sense to rent games first before you buy, for many reasons, you can build a collection of games that are really good and not games that you’ve regretted buying, or you haven’t forked out $60 on a game that turned out to be a load of rubbish then tried to trade it in at the gamestore for next to nothing, so why gamefly?

Gamefly has all the latest games for the latest systems, they also have plenty of the older games if that’s what you want, you get the games in the mail fairly quickly, you can rent 1, 2 ,3 or 4 at a time and prices start at around 8 and a half bucks for 1 game at a time, I personally rent 3 at a time for the ps2 and ps3, this works well for me as I have 4 boys too so there is always at least two up to date games in the house whereas I certainly couldn’t afford to buy a new game each week.

The ads don’t do this company justice as they tell you nothing, once you’ve been a member for 3 months you automatically get $5 game credits towards your next purchase or membership fee, you can also pay a “keep” price to keep a good game that you have and they are usually cheaper than the game stores, plus they will send you the case and booklet at no extra cost, also if you are still a member after a year you not only get the $5 every 3 months but you also get an extra 10% off purchases.

Lastly you can also trade your old games in at gamefly, and usually for much more than the game stores will give you up to $20 or more trade-in i’ve seen on the site which is excellent.  If you want to trade a game in you have to have been a member for 3 months, click on the trade-in button at the site, print out their pre-paid mailing label and send off your game, it’s that simple.

This definitely pays for itself in the long run, plus you don’t  have to waste gas travelling to the store finding they don’t have what you want, they even have games listed to put in your game Q before their release date.

My recommendation if your going to use gamefly is the 2 at a time plan for $22.95 per month, this might sound expensive but when you think two games per month at $60 each is very expensive and you don’t always know for sure your going to like them, during the course of a month you could easily get to play 10 new games or more and if you buy one or two a month anyway it pays for itself, it really does.

I’ve seen resident evil 5 just this week still being advertised at certain places for $40, I paid $24.99 for Resident Evil 5 from Gamefly and it’s a great addition to my ps3 collection, you can quit your membership anytime so you really have nothing to lose by trying them out.

I give gamefly 10 out of 10 as I don’t have a bad thing to say about them, I emailed them and they even phoned me instead of answering the email, how’s that for customer service.

Uncharted 2, yes there has been a lot of hype over this game, I  read the world first review on this game in my latest edition of  Playstation magazine and I must admit it has made me really want to give this one a go.

I’d heard about this game several times before but didn’t pay it much attention but after reading up on what has gone into the game the graphics, the story and the type of action it really does sound pretty cool, if I like it enough then i’ll give a play by play post like I did with RE5.

Anyway here is a little about the game, it seems there isn’t a movement you can’t do, hang, drop, jump, slide, take cover, you name it you can do it.  There is also a lot of  shootouts, but more than that is a lot of puzzle solving, this is what caught my attention, I don’t really like just shoot em ups, I like a good rpg with a storyline and a bit of shooting, but I also like puzzle solving and using tactics, this has all the elements of being a great rpg.

Another unusual aspect is there are five difficulty levels whereas most games will only give you three so there will be a difficulty level for everyone,  I personally start on the easiest on most games and work my throught to the hardest so this one will obviously keep me going for many hours.

There is also some massive online play and that was just in beta, earning in-game money will allow you to purchase unlockables like weapon upgrades and new skins. Online modes  vary from deathmatch to goldrush, there are co-op modes for two or three players so all in all it’s sounding cool.

The game doesn’t release till October 13th so I may just download the beta online version tonight and give it a go, i’ll post here once i’ve had a first hand experience of this and let you know what I think.

If your interested you can pre-order Uncharted 2 from amazon, you can check them out from the ad on the far right hand column, just make sure the store has a good lifetime rating and you’ll have no problems.

Here is a picture of one of the figurines I took from my TV using my cellphone, just wanted to see what it comes out like on the blog, had to mess around with it a bit with contrast and brightness etc… If it comes out ok I may go ahead and publish more as I think they look pretty cool, they are surprisingly much better than the figurines on RE4.

Majini (Wetlands A)

Well it’s not brilliant, but it came out better than I expected, may try and sort out my digital camera, hope you enjoy the pics once I get them all sorted.

Yes started to play RE5 today, in some ways it was excellent, I am really enjoying the game but at the same time there is a bit of disappointment there.

I was surprised they took the merchant away, he was an excellent addition to RE4 but again I like the fact the inventory system means you can carry unlimited amount of things, well at least to a certain degree, you can’t access the full inventory until the end or beginning of each level, during each level you can carry up to 9 items, you can still combine the herbs which is good.

The most noticeable change ( apart from graphics ) is the Zombie’s, they are so fast now, it is a very fast paced game, when you come across enemies it’s usually in groups so you’ve got 4 or 5 minutes of non-stop action, panic almost in some areas, ammo is fairly limited especially early on, my first two groups of zombies was mostly fought with the knife.

Something I miss from RE4 is the lack of speed, I liked being able to work out what my next move would be, knowing the enemy was slower than me gave me the chance to experiment with tactics whereas RE5 is so quick you don’t have chance for tactics, you can’t outrun the enemy so it’s a stand and fight or die situation, although in a few areas if you get the chance you can get yourself on higher ground to pick enemies off more leisurely.

Well I played with my son for about 4hrs straight and we made it to chapter 3-1 and called it a day, i’m pleased with the game overall, just miss some of the aspects of  RE4 but i’m still getting used to this, resident evil fans will love it, it will be another keeper i’m sure.

Will  update as a review once completed, looking forward to the unlockables, it seems there might be more than in the previous resident evil, plus we have trophies to go for now which I think is fun.

Resident Evil 4 |

I played this game for more than 6 months, I completed it at least 4 times, got every mercenary quest done, absolutely contagious this game was for me.

The storyline was very cool in the usual resident evil way, the merchant  guy was probably my favourite character, it was amazing when he first appeared, I couldn’t stop laughing he was just so cool. “what a ya buying?” ” what a ya selling?” reminded me of a pirate dude.

In fact when I came across a guy in Oblivion called Shady Sam he reminded me so much of the merchant  in resident evil 4 I went back and played it again for a couple of weeks.

There are so many different forms of enemies in this game and the boss fights are really enjoyable, a vast range of weapons and quick pace set this game up for me as one of the all time greats of the resident evil series.

I’m writing the review now as i’ve just ordered the new Resident Evil 5 for my ps3 and i’m hoping it’s going to live up to the same standards as number 4, the only preview i’ve seen on RE5 was a quick glimpse of Whesker so hopefully 5 will be better than 4, looking forward to it.

It can get difficult at times to upgrade your weapons so you do need to find all the gems which fit into the various treasures so the items are worth more, fitting items into items typically increases their value many more times than if you sold the item seperately.

Once i’d played through about 3 times was when I then opted to try the mercenaries, that is hard, your either going to enjoy it or get really frustrated with it and probably destroy your tv, it’s great fun, if you haven’t played Resident Evil 4 you should, definitely.

Overall rating i’m giving another 10 out of 10, I know it seems like i’m being generous with the ratings but i’m not, it mostly takes a top notch game to keep my interest now, I know what it takes to make a really good RPG so most of the games i’ll write reviews on will almost certainly be a 9 or 10.  I don’t really see the point in writing a bad review on a bad game, I just simply won’t recommend a bad game so if i’m not going to recommend something why write about it, makes sense to me.

Wow, one of the best games i’ve ever played, this game is awesome, i’ve just finished all that I can, meaning the basic game not the one with all the extras, it’s the only thing that stopped me buying it, i’ll wait until I can get the version with all the extra quests.

I did finally manage to get all the trophies for this game and as soon as I get the chance i’ll sync it with the playstation server for all to see.

Ok review time, there isn’t much else they could have done with this game which would have made it better, it really was that good.  The main quest again could be completed fairly quickly but with the amount of side quests and some very hard to find quest items and bobbleheads it made for many many more extra hours of game play.

There seemed to be traces of so many other good games in this one, in some cases it was very much like Morrowind and Oblivion with guns yet it was nothing like those two games, when one of my boys first saw Fawkes he said “cool, a better version of Nemesis” I thought that wasn’t a bad description really, Fawkes was pretty cool.

I have to admit there were two bobbleheads  I would never have found on my own, one in particular I ended up having to look for the location online, even after finding it I knew I would have never found it on my own, a place called Rocopolis  ( or similar ).

The quests in this game aren’t boring either, there always seems to be something new wherever you go, dialogue can play an important part but it’s not a have to, you can be very good and get rewarded for your goodness or you can be downright evil, or of course you can be a bit of both, it works on a good, neutral or bad karma rating.

I think the thing that is really going to draw the playtime out for you is if your like me and decide to go for every trophy in the game, I would say hunting all the trophies gave me an extra 20 hours of playtime at least,  I really enjoyed going away from the main quest to explore, the fact that you could get certain beings to hang around with you was cool, I used my extra buddies to carry an awesome amount of stuff when I would have had to go back to my house if i’d have been alone, and a dog too, how cool was that? Get your own dog who can hunt down meds or ammo for you, my next dog I get i’m going to call him “Dogmeat”.

Overall rating i’m giving 10 out  of 10, it was so enjoyable to play this game, I can’t wait to pick up the game of the year edition with the extra quests.
